Academic Advising

Purpose

1. The College provides for personal academic support. The Head of Department and the Academic Advisor provide general academic guidance relating to the student’s academic performance.

2 The purpose of academic advising is to provide guidance to students so that they may achieve their academic objectives, and through a careful monitoring of their degree plans, ensure that they conform to the various rules and regulations and assist them to overcome any obstacles that might impede the successful completion of their degree.  In order to progress smoothly through their degree plans, students need to have accurate information about subject requirements and how to fulfill them.

3 The Academic Advisor provides this information in a clear and accurate fashion. The academic advisors approval must be sought in most decisions regarding student’s academic progress.

4 The SUC’s credit semester system can be initially confusing for secondary school graduates, especially since the student’s degree plan must proceed according to a specified sequence of steps in a particular order.  The Academic Advisor helps the student to understand these steps and procedures and offers assistance in the case of problems of conflicts.  The advisor is also the official signatory of most of the forms that concern the student such as Registration sheet, Drop and Add form etc.  However, the academic advisors main function is to guide students in important decisions affecting students program of study.

5 Students can approach their Head of department or Academic Advisor for academic support in relation to poor performance. In providing academic guidance, the College aims to advise the student on areas of weakness in their performance, but the College is not required or obliged to provide the student with sight or review of the submitted assessment or examination.
