Workshop on project proposal Preparation

The Department of Business Administration, Sur University college had conducted a one day workshop on project proposal preparation on 2nd December 2008.  The objective of the workshop was to disseminate information on project proposal preparation among the project I students in the business administration department.  The workshop was well attended by the project I students in the four specialties (Accounting, Finance and Banking, Hotel Management and Tourism and Management and Marketing) and the faculty members of the department.

The workshop started with the introductory speech by Prof. Nazar-Al Rubayi, Head of the department. He shared his experience in guiding project students of the previous batches and highlighted the importance of approaching the project proposal preparation in  a systematic manner so as to finish the task within the limited time.

The theme paper of the workshop was presented by Dr Sajeev, faculty member of the department. (Text of the presentation is posted) This was followed by discussion and question hour session by the participants.

Prof. Ahmed Sharieh, Dean of the college attended the workshop throughout and offered valuable suggestions on improving the quality of project proposal preparation.  The students gave their feed back at the end and presented the practical difficulties they experience in field work and data collection.  Dean offered to solve these issues and advised the students to meet him if they face any problems that can be tackled through administrative intervention.

The workshop concluded with vote of thanks by Mr. Thomas Chandy, teaching faculty in the department.

The following Faculty members/Teaching staff attended the workshop apart from the project I students.

           Prof. Ahmed Sharieh, Dean

Prof. Nazar Al Rubayi, Head, Department of BA

           Dr Sajeev Surendranath, faculty member

           Mr. Thomas Chandry, Teaching staff

Mr. Anas Al Btoush, Teaching staff

The following are the contents of the presentation

PREPARATION OF A PROJECT PROPOSAL

The objectives of a project proposal

         Requirement of college graduate programme

Introduce students to research methods and to start developing a sense of critical enquiry

As a precursor to the preparation of a detailed project report

Contents of a project proposal

  1. Title

  2. Introduction

  3. Literature Review

  4. Statement of the problem

  5. Aim

  6. Research Questions

  7. Research Objectives

  8. Research Methodology – Sample design and sources

  9. Method of data collection and analysis

  10. Constraints – How to overcome the constraints

  11. How are u going to prepare and present your final report? (Activities and Time plan)

  12. References

1- Title – An appropriate title for the research – Should reflect the idea of research

2 - Introduction – Starting point of the project proposal – serve as a back ground for the proposed exploration – The introduction may include – Rationale of the study – Conceptual underpinnings – purpose etc

     3. Literature Review

Two major reasons exist for reviewing the literature.

The preliminary search that  helps you to generate and refine your research ideas

To understand the level of explorations so far made in the selected field of your research

    4. Statement of the problem

This will help you to state clearly the fundamental issues that you propose to explore.  This will also lead you to the framing of research questions and objectives.

         5. Aim – Stating the purpose of research in broad and general terms (can also be

considered as the broad objectives of research)

6. Research questions

what do you specifically want to find out about the subject or what do we need to know to help us understand why things are happening as they are?

The research questions should neither be too easy to answer nor too difficult.  The questions should be designed to generate new insights.  It is often useful to start with a general focus research question followed by several more detailed question

7. Research objectives

  •        The general focus research questions and the detailed research questions form the base from which you  write a set of research objectives.

  •             Research objectives are likely to lead a greater specificity than investigative questions

8. Research methodology

Research methodology: research strategy, sampling strategy, data collection and analysis methods and validity and reliability.

Research strategy (what strategy will you use to frame the research and why is it appropriate?)

Sampling (what sampling procedure will you use to select your sample and why is it apt?)

9. Method of data collection and analysis

·        Data collection (which of the following methods, desk study, questionnaires, interviews and observations, will you use to collect your secondary and primary data and why are they appropriate?)

·        Data analysis (how will you analyse your data and why are the methods appropriate?)

10. Constraints

Do you anticipate any constraint in the collection of data or further progress in the study? If so, how are you going to overcome that?

11. Time Plan - what and when will you do your research, e.g. design, literature review, data collection, data analysis, write and submit)

     12. References

It is appropriate to follow Harvard referencing  in your proposal and subsequent report.
