Foundation Program Overview

Foundation studies focus on the delivery of English training subjects as well as subjects in mathematics and basic computing skills.  The typical duration of study in the foundation program is one year.

The objective of the Foundation Program is to prepare students for entry to the first year of the undergraduate degree program delivered by Sur University College in the medium of English Language.

Students need to achieve a minimum score of 6.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or other equivalent test before they can consider studying full-time at undergraduate level.

Placement Tests

All prospective students must take a placement test to determine their proficiency in English Language.  They can then be placed at the appropriate level in the Foundation Program.

Duration of Program

Students will study the Foundation Program over two 17 week semesters.  However, those students who have not reached 4.5 IELTS will need to take a third semester of ten weeks before completing the Program.

Structure of the Foundation Program

There are six levels of General English Language courses designed to encourage students to think in English and to develop their skills and confidence for using authentic English in real situations.

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Language Laboratory and homework activities are integrated into the classroom syllabus, providing further opportunities for students to practice and develop their English skills.

Assessment

In each  course there are designated weekly assessment tasks in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

There is also a Mid-Semester and End of Semester Exam in Reading, Writing and Listening.

Certificate of Completion

Students who successfully complete each level of the Foundation Program will be issued with an internationally-recognized Hawthorn Program Certificate of Completion.
