About Sur University
College

Sur University College was granted
its operating license on 20th May 2001 and accepted its first
intake of nearly 300 students on 1st October 2001. The
founder and Chairman is Sheikh Mubarak Bahwan, who is himself a 'Suri'.
Sheikh Bahwan had the vision to establish a university within the region
based upon several key factors:
·
Since 1994
the Omani government has issued licenses for the establishment of private
colleges and universities within the Sultanate;
·
This
initiative reflects the growing importance of providing high quality
further education for school leavers in line with the government's
Omanisation program which aims to replace expatriate workers with
qualified and skilled Omani nationals;
· Previously the only higher
education institution in Sur was the government-funded Teacher Training
College which meant an ideal opportunity for creating the region's first
private university college;
· The Al Sharqiya region is
the third largest in Oman in terms of population growth, economic
prosperity and development. Such conditions provide employment
opportunities which create a demand for competent staff with graduate
qualifications who can now be sourced locally.
The government's requirement for
private institutions to implement consistent high quality academic
standards is achieved at present through affiliation with international
academic bodies. This has resulted in Sur University College forming
a partnership with Bond University .
Affiliation with
Bond University
Bond University is set on a
66-hectare campus at Robina on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
Created in the traditions of the
world’s leading private universities, a series of grand sandstone faculty
buildings line a landscaped promenade leading down to the tranquil
man-made lake.
Lecture theatres, case study rooms
and tutorial rooms are conveniently located in the University Centre
building; several student restaurants, cafes and bars circle the lake; and
on-campus accommodation is within easy walking distance of all university
faculties.
The study facilities here are
world-class, incorporating high-tech lecture theatres, the latest
broadband and wifi computer connections, and libraries that are ranked
among Australia’s best.
Complementing these academic
features, you’ll find a comprehensive selection of recreational and social
outlets that encourage interaction between students outside the classroom.
